An Invitation to a Mythical World
A review of the new single and theme song from colourful duo Exosquelette
Peter Joseph Head has been making music for many years under different guises. My first encounter with Peter's work was at a show curated by Albert’s Basement where he sang and played guitar in the band Humansixbillion. His voice rang out in this raw and distinctive way, cutting through with easily digestible lyrics. His quirky pop sensibilities and lengthy lyricism has been apparent in all his music ventures since.
Here we have the first track from Exosquelette, which is aptly titled The Theme of Esosquelette and due for general release on 27 July. The duo describes the track within their bio:
“We believe all bands should have a theme song. Like Devo's Jocko Homo or Hey Hey We're The Monkeys. This is ours. It's an invitation to a mythical world called Exosquelette”.
Also revealed about the song, “It was written via text messages when we were first getting to know each other, which they say is, full of ridiculousness and antonymous word-play”.
Here is the track:
It’s fast, it’s fun and it’s full of joyous pop melodies. Peter and Edith seem to be really enjoying this colourful project as they both share the vocal duties (in English and French) both separately and merge together to create a spark. Repetition is important in making their theme in the hope it hangs around in your head like all good pop songs. I can hear some Belle and Sebastian in there as well as Camera Obscura in the best kind of way.
It was recorded by the lovely Nick Huggins at his Resting Bell Studio in Point Lonsdale. Nick Huggins has worked with Dirty Three and many cool Melbourne bands and has made heaps of music for TV and film.
“The song was built around a Casiotone beat, but unfolded into something bigger once we found ourselves surrounded by drums and pianos and amplifiers”.
It certainly feels like a lot is going on and at times I am overwhelmed by how many words are being said in quick succession. But as I listen over again it makes more sense as this bubbly duo has so much to share and asks the listener to dive into their wild and mythical world.
Exosquelette has an upcoming show this Sunday!
