Cold Hands Warm Heart (CHWH) are musicians Genevieve Fry, Georgia Harvey, Esala Liyanage, and Travis John. Collectively they make beautiful minimal sounds evoking bark, branches, stones and clay. Instead of focusing on their own thoughts, feelings and emotions, CHWH focus on nature with things like a fallen tree, teeming with life or the swell of a river, after rain.
As I listen to Luxury Bat now in the surrounds of Lilydale Lake in the Yarra Valley, Woiwurrung territory (traditionally part of the Kulin Nation), it feels perfect as the sounds of nature around me override my headphones. Time slows down as this record makes you focus and notice what’s going on around you in a sensory experience.
The legendary TripleR Radio chose Luxury Bat as their album of the week in December 2023 saying, “The album's six tracks blend structured songwriting with improvisation to create fluid, open-ended soundscapes connected to the natural world”.
Also mentioned through the Triple R write up:
“The recordings were made over three days at Super Melody World, a studio set in a 19th-century schoolhouse within the Macedon Ranges. Surrounded by nature, Genevieve along with Georgia Harvey, Esala Liyanage, and Travis John tracked these new songs, capturing them primarily in single live takes. Field recordings further ground the album to place like the Cicadas and frogs heard during hikes along Mount Tarangawa and Mount Muru”.
Genevieve and Esala from CHWH also run Eastmint, a local artist-run studio, event space and label, which released Luxury Bat in November 2023.

Cold Hands Warm Heart
Bark. Branches. Stones. Clay. Cold Hands Warm Heart is a Narrm-based collective of four musicians who seek to pay homage to nature by evoking it through experimental soundscapes. A fallen tree, teeming with life. The swell of a river, after rain. This is music that draws attention to deep time by inviting deep listening.
The band’s work springs from the base compositions of Genevieve Fry (Hantu, Whelk, Hear My Eyes: Suspiria, Grand Salvo), combining harp, synth, recorder, percussion and guitar to guide listeners through sonic spaces that are both pre-arranged and improvised.
CHWH’s self-titled, award-winning 2016 LP is now followed by the band’s new album, Luxury Bat.
Releasing on November 24th, 2023, this latest release, recorded with James Cecil at Super Melody World (Time for Dreams, Totally Mild), mixed by Joe Talia (Oren Ambarchi, Francis Plagne, Yuko Kono) and mastered by Rashad Becker (HTRK, Imogen Cygler, Keiji Haino), is an offering of tracks that continue this work of centring the natural world—namely the Country of the Wurundjeri, Boonwurrung and Dja Dja Wurrung peoples. Luxury Bat pays tribute to the existence, experience and protection of these lands, and their ever regenerating cycles.///////////////////
