Disco Balls, chasing that spark, and not settling for the mundane
Post Fiction have just dropped the debut single Feel Alive and lead singer Shannon joins Tempo to introduce themselves and share what a couple of hours of walking (dancing) around the city looks like with their Disco mate.
Hello Shannon, firstly congratulations on your debut single Feel Alive being out in the world. Can you tell us what it's all about?
Feel Alive is about chasing that spark that gets you up and about every morning. It’s about not wanting to settle for the mundane and gives you permission to strive for more!
The song is a real ear worm and fits nicely in the rock/indie-pop sphere with its sound and delivery. What are your biggest influences for what you do?
The four of us tend to draw inspiration from all over the place. We all grew up listening to a wide variety of bands like The Killers, MGMT, Daft Punk, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Muse, The Cardigans, Queens of the Stone Age and ABBA, just to name a few. In recent years we’ve also been influenced by artists like Balu Brigada, Turnstile and Royal Otis. For me, my inspo as a front woman also comes from artists like Hayley Williams, Hevenshe and Charli XCX.
If your music was a meal, what would it be?
A charcuterie board paired with an espresso martini. There’s a mix of something for everyone, and a little sweet treat to keep you up at night!
The video clip that accompanies the song is very cool and I love the way that you have someone with a disco ball dancing and roaming the streets of Melb/Naarm, which complements the song both rhythmically and visually. Can you tell us who made the clip, the inspiration and how long it took to make?
Our music video was directed, filmed and edited all by our very own bassist Nick Wyatt. We spent a couple of hours walking (dancing) around the city with our Disco mate, and Nick put it all together in his spare time in about a week.
We wanted to reflect the infectious nature of the song and how much it just makes you want to get up and dance your way through the night.
I am wondering if you are currently building towards an EP or album release and if so, are the rest of the tracks in a similar vein or can we expect other directions as well?
We are currently working towards the release of our debut EP at the end of this year! We want to keep the momentum going, so you can expect to hear a new single from us every 6-8 weeks through the rest of 2026.
There’s a bit of variety to keep you on your toes with this EP. Each track does tend to slightly shift sonically, with some being a little more pop-synth driven, while others are a little more rocky.
What’s the best advice you have got?
Be intentional with what you do, but just have fun and enjoy the moment.
Do you have any plans to launch the single at this stage or are you building towards something with a bigger release?
We’re building towards a launch for our second single! You can catch us upstairs at The Bendi on August 28th celebrating the release of Play Yourself.
Lastly, what’s your favourite Melb/Naarm bands right now that I should interview for Tempo?
We’ll keep you real busy! We’re loving Daydreamers, Left at the Avenue, Blyss, In The Caverns of Death, Supermodels, Sophie Kelly, Trip to Paris and Pet Therapy, just to name a few.
