Yeah fascinating questions really.. it’s hard to say exactly what makes a group so successful especially in areas like Melbourne say, where there is almost saturation point of talent.
Melbourne always seemed very supportive if you were in the scene and like it functioned more or less as a close knit group of venues, bands, and promoters/public radio people.
A very much who you know and not what you can do environment that could feel pretty closed and full of itself from the outside for lack of a better term.
In that way I think the popularity game scene often undermined artists in a weird way. You’d watch bands hit that Tote ceiling with nowhere to go afterwards. Either because they didn’t have major appeal outside their scene or because the framework wasn’t there for them to push forward beyond that.
I think the live nation rot that is getting into venues etc is just exacerbating the difficulties further..
